"In grad school, a lot of it is about perserverance, because no matter how brilliant you are, you will undoubtedly have a lot of failures."
- Prof Chan on what it takes to succeed in graduate school
At some point in your undergraduate studies, you may start questioning yourself: is graduate school for me? In 2015, we managed to secure an interview with Prof Chan Yin Thai, from the NUS Department of Chemistry, in which he heartily shared with us years of research and teaching experiences.

Prof Chan graduated with a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkerly, USA and also obtained a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

Prof Chan is Assistant Dean of Research & Graduate Studies in NUS Department of Chemistry. His current research interest is in semiconductor nanocrystals, in particular investigating their non-linear optical properties.

It was a fruitful session for all of us as we understood more about whether graduate school is suitable for us, as well as the job prospects for all students who are aspiring to work in the field of chemistry research. Watch the interview video below to find out if a career in research and/or teaching is suitable for you!
