Nalco Champion is an Ecolab company that provides safe, sustainable chemistry services such as enhanced oil recovery and hydroprocessing to the oil and gas industry. Last summer, we had the opportunity to interview Mr Elgin Ting, a Quality Control Analyst from Nalco Champion, to introduce to chemistry undergraduates the career of an analytical chemist.

Mr Elgin graduated with a B.Sc (Hons) in Chemistry from National University of Singapore in 2013, and has been working at Nalco Champion since 2014. As a quality control officer, Mr Elgin is in charge of analysis of raw materials and finished products, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, performing impromptu troubleshooting, amongst others.

From the interview, we learnt a lot about what an analytical chemist does, and what skill sets are useful to becoming an analytical chemist.
