Undergraduate Symposium 2017

February 18, 2017

Shaun Tan

The first ever NUS-ACS Undergraduate Symposium was held in February this year. The aim of the event was to provide a platform for current undergraduate researchers to present their projects to a large, unfamiliar audience, allowing them to hone their science communication skills, while at the same time inspire their peers to participate in research through a 'if-I-can-do-it-so-can-you' approach. The symposium also aimed to provide networking opportunities for undergraduates to exchange ideas with esteemed professors.

The symposium opened with a talk by the guest-of-honor, Adjunct Assistant Professor Klement Foo. Prof. Klement is an experienced researcher at the Experimental Therapeutics Center of A*STAR, specializing in drug discovery and total synthesis of natural products. He shared with the audience his story of how he went into research, as well as his current work at A*STAR.

Next was the highlight of the event - the poster session. Participants were judged by 3 different examiners, from within and outside their field. They were also quizzed by random walk-in audience, many of them intrigued by the myriad of poster topics on displays.

Finally, each participant was awarded with a certificate endorsed by ACS and CAS as acknowledgement. Prizes were also awarded to the top six Outstanding Posters. All in all, for an inaugural event it was a great success, and we hope to see more participants next year!

"I find it useful because I get to know what I know and what I don't know. I believe being able to communicate science simply shows how much you understand and this is a good test for that.

- Feedback from a participant, on the usefulness of the symposium
